If I had a dollar for every time I have heard the saying; “ People who can’t do; teach”; my pockets would be full of Fool’s Gold.
I have many friends who are teachers, and a universal quality I have noticed about my friends who are teachers is they are “World Class” parents and grandparents.
Have you ever noticed when elite athletes asked who had the most significant influence on their success it is their parents, teachers or coaches?
Many of us recognize the importance of an excellent education or trade. Many of us invest a decent amount of money in learning our profession or career’s skill.
Sales Management was a big part of my career; part of my responsibility was the training and education budget; this budget included personal development for our folks. The personal development budget was separate from the company’s training budget.
There is a strong belief in the employment community; people who take personal time for lifelong learning makes a better employee.
Each year for the first several years in this management position I would announce the company had a personal development budget and would ask those interested in additional education to reach out and we could discuss.
Each year I would get no or very little interest, and I was perplexed. Finally, I started to survey our salespeople and found out most felt they had put 3 or 4 years into a University Education and did not feel they should take their own time to continue their lifelong learning. These salespeople wished the company would devote work time to life skills.
Life skills education may not have had a direct connection to the company’s training context, but I thought it was a great idea.
A company’s training program does not always have a direct line to your company’s goals. Helping your employees improve their life skills does come back as an excellent return to your organization.
Improved Personal Financial Skills
I am currently working with others to improve their finances through investment real estate. Each time I work with someone it always comes back to the financial basics.
If you are a lifelong learner, teacher, coach or consultant you need to reflect on your development outside of your specialty. Draw upon the continuity of your personal life whether it is physical, mental, financial, family, community or social interests and ask yourself why you have not hired someone like a coach or a consultant to help you maximize your talent in those areas of your life.
Today even though I love one on one coaching in the field of investment real estate; I am honing my coaching and consulting pursuit to reach a broader audience. I am happy to share my passion for investment real estate through my blogging, magazine article writing, podcasting and over a coffee and this comes at no cost to you but your time. I appreciate you being part of my audience.
